This painting captures the detail of the "Madonna delle Arpie" by Andrea del Sarto, signed and dated 1517, preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This painting was perhaps commissioned to a unknown artist and sold in Germany in 1885 for 200 Marks, as the vintage cartouche on the back of the canvas reads.  The painting has been cleaned (but not restored) and the canvas has been repaired. Craquelure corresponding to the estimated dating. With later frame.

Andrea, who owes the name with which he went down to history to his father’s craft (Sarto in Italian means Taylor), started early by learning the first rudiments of art with a goldsmith and then became an apprentice of painter Gian Barile. The painter acknowledged the boy’s talent and recommended him to Piero di Cosimo who welcomed him into his workshop. He owed much to the art of Raphael and Fra’ Bartolomeo. In 1509 he was commissioned the frescoes for the atrium of the Annunziata (Miracoli di san Filippo Benizi, Nascita della Vergine, 1510-14), il Battesimo di Cristo and the cycle of Giovanni Battista agli Scalzi (1512-15) and the medallions in the refectory of San Salvi. The beautiful Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino at the Borghese Gallery dates back to 1515. In 1517, he painted the gorgeous Madonna delle Arpie, today at the Uffizi Gallery, while the following year he left for France, where he worked for Francis I until 1519 ( e.g. Carità at Louvre). Back in Florence, he created frescoes such as the Tributo di Cesare for the Villa in Poggio a Caiano (1521), the Presentazione della testa del Battista and the Nascita del Battista, also at the Scalzi (1523) and the Madonna del Sacco, in the large cloister of Annunziata (1525). In 1523 he likely made a trip to Venice, as supposedly proved by the landscape in Deposizione, kept at Palazzo Pitti (1524). In his last years, he painted more masterpieces, including the Quattro Santi (1528), also at the Uffizi Gallery. He died of plague in 1530
