Ruth Garrido Vila

A Sumerian cream clay cuneiform cone. The head is typically mushroom-shaped, the body inscribed with ten vertical lines of cuneiform script. A large proportion of such cones are under the name of Gudea, but his name cannot be seen on this example and so would appear to be a scarcer, but still early type. 
Circa 2100-1800 BC.

Very Fine condition; a little damage at the top affecting the beginning of two lines of script; otherwise complete and intact with good clear text.

PROVENANCE: From a British 1980’s-1990’s collection of cuneiform which was examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert, Professor of Archaeology at Birmingham University. Many of the pieces (but not this cone) were accompanied by his own detailed notes with translations.


Cuneiform cones, or nails, were inscribed with cuneiform and buried under the foundations, or built into the walls, of important public buildings and temples during construction to sanctify the site and to create a historical memory of the ruler and his achievements. Hidden from view, these inscribed objects were meant to be found during later restorations, an important consideration in a land of floods and wars, when such buildings were constructed of simple baked clay.
