Silk damask fabric cutoffs with decorations of pomegranates, vine and palm leaves. From Genoa, late 17th century. 
Damask is a fabric made with large, usually floral and stylized designs, in which the base is made of satin armour while the design are made from the same satin armour used on the reverse. The decorative effect is given by the brightness contrast between the straight satin of the base and the reverse satin of the motif.
The fabric has no reverse, even if you prefer to use the side where the design is formed by the texture as the front.

The Gothic Italian damask was manly made of silk and linen, more rarely of wool. In the Baroque era it was enriched with gold and silver threads and with decorative motifs in light relief, as in the two specimens in question.
These fabrics have been widely used to make sacred vestments, tapestries, furniture covers, but also gala clothing.

The pair of ruby silk damask fabric cutoffs on auction features a rich pyramidal decoration with pomegranates, vine and palm leaves.  Some photos were shot with modified light in order to highlight the relief of the fabric. The real ruby colour is visible in the first photos.

As shown in the last three photos, there is a darn 15 cm long on the bottom of one of the cutoffs, and two cuts at the edges, one is 6 cm long the other is 4 cm long. Also a pair of small holes.

Adolph Loewi (Munich 1888 - Hawaiian Islands 1977), honorary consul in Venice in 1923, was an antiquarian specialized in paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. He was among the most important antique dealers in the field of collectable ancient fabrics and costumes, selling both to the most important collectors of the time and to numerous museums in Europe and the United States.
Many pieces from the rich collection and textile archive of LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) comes from purchases made by Loewi.
