Elaborately carved malangan sculpture from New Ireland, formerly New Mecklenburg in German New Guinea. Malagan ceremonies are major events, which take place at irregular intervals after months or years of preparations, and can go on several days. Although malagan ceremonies always take place in honour of one or more deceased individuals, they are not purely mourning rituals, they also encompass other aspects of their culture. For example, the repayment of debts or recognition of obligations. Furthermore, disputes are resolved and disclosures made. In preparation for the malagan ceremonies, ornate wooden carvings were/are made, which were burned at the end of the ceremonies. Nowadays however, most of these are preserved, as the traditional skilled craftsmanship of the carvers is in short supply. The piece being offered comes from a private collection in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.
