Provenance; ex – collection of Jean Dierickx, Brussels. Bought from him around 1970 by H. Westerdijk.

Although the style of the Bena Kanioka is closely bound up with that of the Luba, they have never the less developed a carving tradition of their own in a highly expressionistic and even anecdotal manner. Their most characteristic style element is the round, crosshatched hairdo which is drawn into a bun. Here we have two ladies embracing a bowl between them. Such objects are called kabila mboko and are bound upwith chieftainship. On the lid we see a reptile in the shape of a lizard. Fine details in tribal markings, facial expressions, coiffure and geometrical designs. This is clearly a prestige item used in the house of members of the political elite. Though the subject is borrowed from the Luba, the execution is typical Bena Kanioka.
