M16 and M18 remained in use during the Weimar Reichswehr era and in the early years of the Third Reich until the development of the smaller and lighter M35 helmet in June 1935. In an effort to reduce the time of construction and the costs of manual labour minor modifications were introduced in March 1940 that resulted in the M40 helmet. Additional modifications in the construction were carried out in August 1942 resulting in the M42 helmet.
