Special piece by Maarten Meuldijk, an artist from Utrecht.

Is in very good condition (it shows no restoration under blacklight) and is nicely framed.

Work by Maarten Meuldijk is rare, and the 2 pieces that were auctioned at the Venduehuis in the Hague easily made 800 and 1200 Euro. 

Meuldijk came from a very poor family, he was the second child of Hendrik Meuldijk and Huibertje Blaak. His parents were very religious farm workers and often had trouble making ends meet. He was regularly confronted with the social exploitation of workers, children and animals. Especially the early death of his mother in 1915, due to not being able to pay for medical treatment, formed the basis for his later social involvement. A theme that keeps reoccurring in his later work.
As a child he already stood out in drawing, sculpting, writing and algebra. As one of few from his social class, he was allowed to receive an education through the Henry Preuijt study fund. In 1916, he obtained the certificate of ability to teach secondary education. He also took, at the academy of art in The Hague, an education to become a visual artist and graphic artist. After that, he settled in Haarlem in 1918 as a portrait painter. There he also met his future wife Goverdiena Rongen.
Via some wanderings as an artist and teacher, he settled in 1921 in Zwollerkerspel (now part of the municipality of Zwolle) as a freelance artist. In 1933/35, he moved to Utrecht where he lived until his death.
Meuldijk already exhibited several times from 1921 to the 1930s in Zwolle and The Hague. In the themes of his early work his social commitment was already quite pronounced. In addition to many religious themes, including the agony of Christ and the death of John the Baptist, he was also strongly attracted to Greek mythology. The suffering of Prometheus was featured by him several times, both in charcoal on paper, oil on canvas as well as in clay.
Critics have praised his work as being touching, tough and demonstrating great craftsmanship. His topics varied and his scenes also captured the hard life of peasants which was interesting to many visitors. He handled a variety of styles and his larger-than-life charcoal drawings were often compared to the work of Jan Toorop. Due to the size of these pieces, they often impressed the visitors. Especially his war cycle featuring the atrocities of both the Boer War and the First World War has many visitors cover their mouths in astonishment. The work of Vincent van Gogh and his use of colour were a great inspiration for later work.
Oeuvre: Portraits of the top class in Haarlem and surroundings, various stations of the cross, both in charcoal as well as in oil painting. He did book covers, landscapes and portraits. Painted church windows in stained glass. Much of his work, however, was lost due to acts of war.

In the painting offered for sale here (1930-1933) he shows washerwomen on the lake of Lugano in Switzerland. He stayed there for several months in the late 1920s.

The last photo shows the artist, with his wife at his side, while working. A similar piece, which is owned by the artist's family, shows an opposite perspective.
