Butterfield type dial signed by the master dial maker in Paris, end of the 17th century to early 18th century.
octagonal with engraved plate and decorated with scrolls, 4 reading tables with a compass with Fleur de Lys as well as cardinal points, folding bird with correction, back with European cities with their latitude. 

Michael Butterfield b.1635, active in 1674-1724: was born in England but moved to Paris at a young age. He had a workshop ‘Aux Armes d’Angleterre’ and had exclusively granted his own coat of arms, he was appointed instrument manufacturer for King Louis XIV. He gave his name to the portable dial, also called Butterfield dial, although he was not the only manufacturer and probably not the author of these dials. His craftsmanship has been of the highest quality, although other manufacturers also signed their dial Butterfield in Paris.
