This Grand Tour peroid Greek Attic style Column Krater (wine mixing bowl),  was painted in the manner of a the Painter of Naples, - one of the most important Greek Athenian painters in Antiquity, identified in works spread among the most prestigious museums worldwide. 

It was purchased by a friend several years ago as a genuine vase from the 5th century BC, later he asked the opinion of the curator of the Classical Arts department of the Archaeological Museum of Lisbon, who, after exhaustive examination of the object including X-ray and Termoluminiscence dating said it is not a genuine ancient vase but most probably a very accurately made piece by the Rome workshops in the late 18th - early 19th centuries for the wealthy elites who begun collecting Greek antiquities digged in Rome. The people who have made these vases ald sold them as genuine, were known as "tombaroli", by the locals.

The vase shows good amounts of lime / earth accretions, as expected of an original Archaeological vase that it pretended to look. 

It measures a large 28cm height.

Last 4 pictures shows some original 5th century BC vases.
