This artwork comes from a private collection, after an inheritance dispersion, with its certification (art. 64 L.D. January 22, 2004, no. 42 Law on Cultural Heritage and Landscape (Italy).

This extremely rare Ethiopian icon with four doors with graffiti representing the classic Christian coptic scenes. Coptic icons are different from the other more famous of Eastern Europe in depicted forms as well as in the originality of the depicted characters. Sure, Mary is always the mother of Jesus and mother of God, but here is the Great Mother of us all, Mother Earth. Jesus the Redeemer and the Pantocrator is always our father, a close and lovely father as it is for our religion; but it is evident that here’s a different father, more mysterious, spiritualized, as of another nature, a different world; the monophysitism of that religion is shown through these representations. 
And then there are Archangels Michael and Raphael, but they are the shamanic Guardians of the gates, placed at the entrance of the realm (Gabriel is the Messenger of God, the bearer of his great messages, first of all the one of the Annunciation to Mary and to the world of the New Time coming, of the descent of God, of his son on Earth. Michael is the defender of the realm).
The angels are the other great protagonists of these paintings: innumerable, everywhere, on the walls of the churches, as outline to the other characters; high up in the vaults of the churches, representing the sky. They are depicted in great numbers, often only with their faces, without wings, sometimes with two small wings, just sketched, next to the face. It is in fairly good condition, with the original goat-leather laces, now lost, and replaced with cotton fiber. The pictures are an integral part of the description.
