I am offering for auction a  late 17th/early 18th century oil on canvas of a ship in distress in a stormy sea. Manner of Ludolf Backhuysen, 1630-1708. In a gilt frame. Inscribed on verso, Backhuysen, from the collection of Chas Wynne Esq, Nostell Priory, Yorkshire.

Ludolf Bakhuizen was a German-born Dutch painter, draughtsman, calligrapher and printmaker. He was the leading Dutch painter of maritime subjects after Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger left for England in 1672. Died: 17 November 1708, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The painting measures 49 x 37 cm. The frame measures 67 x 56 cm. 

Purchased at auction by the previous owner from Sotheby's, London, mid 1990's. Further research required.

The painting is in fairly good order.  Please look at all pictures for an accurate idea of condition. One old repair to canvas. The frame has some wear. Ready to hang and enjoy.

Nostell Priory is a huge Palladian house located in Nostell, near Crofton close to Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. After John Wynne died in Rome in 1817, his brother Charles Wynne inherited the estate. Charles commissioned further work on the furnishing and interiors at Nostell and, as a result of his keen antiquarian and scholarly interests, significantly added to the art, furniture and library collections at the house. Charles died in 1874.  The Priory and its contents were given to the National Trust in 1953 by the trustees of the estate and Rowland Winn, 3rd Baron St Oswald.
