The porcelain depiction of a ‘Madonna with Child’ was made by the manufactory F. & W. Goebel following designs by the nun Maria Innocentia Hummel. Innocenti was part of the Franciscan order; she made endearing children’s pictures, which were rendered in porcelain by Goebel. These so-called ‘Hummel figures’ were – and still are – popular with collectors. This specific figure shows the Virgin Mother with her child, in intimate unison. Her son is on her lap and there is a book on her lap too. Her son carelessly rests his foot on it – it is of no concern to them; they are observing a flower. A bird sits on the edge of the book and keeps them company. 

The figure is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. There is an impressed manufacturing mark on the underside; hairline underneath; slight unevenness where the figure was sealed on the base. Artist’s signature on the back ‘M. I. Hummel’. The figure measures 30 cm (height); 21 cm (length).

The porcelain manufacturer F. & W. Goebel is a company in Coburg. It was founded 1871 by Franz Detleff and his son William Goebel and stayed in the family until its closing in the year 2006.
