Original Woodblock Print “Mount Matsuchi” - Series; Forty-eight Famous Views of Edo - 1861 - Carta - Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869) - Giappone - Periodo Edo (1600-1868)

Artist: Hiroshige II Utagawa (1826-1869) Title: 19. Mount Matsuchi Series: Forty-eight Famous Views of Edo Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo Date: c. 1860 Unframed size: 16 x 21 cm Condition report: Perfect colors, cropped margins, minor stains. Terrific landscape design from Hiroshige II's "Forty-Eight Famous Views of Edo." This handsome series was published from 1860 to 1861, early in Hiroshige II's career. These attractive scenes feature classic views of famous landmarks and beautiful scenery in and around Edo, in a variety of seasons. From temples surrounded by blossoming cherry trees to busy harbors or crowded streets, these charming images capture life in old Edo in colorful detail. As with many of Hiroshige II's prints, those comprising the series 'Forty-Eight Famous Views of Edo' borrowed compositional elements from his teacher Hiroshige I Utagawa. At this point, he had just started using his teacher's name who had recently passed away, therefore the prints in this series are signed 'Hiroshige'. This print shows a view of Mount Matsuchi in the rain, the sombre image accentuated by the thin vertical lines across the panel, suggesting a downpour. Travellers caught by the rain are going about their business with umbrellas, seemingly undisturbed. Delicate bokashi (colour shading) at the top and bottom of the print create a wonderful night and day effect. The work on sale was selected and chosen by the curators of the exhibition “Japan. Masters of the East” held at the National Gallery of Cosenza, Italy, in 2022. It bears a statement with the curators' handwritten signatures. Provenance: prestigious private collection. The work is sold without frame and passe-partout. See Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: https://collections.mfa.org/objects/213229 The shipment will be sent with registered tracking code (Weight: 500 g.)
