Anger of the People

Ihei Kimura, Shomei Tomatsu, etc
Japan Congress of Journalists/1960/Japanese/260*183*3

This book is a collection of photographs documenting the unprecedented anti-war struggle against the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty that took place in 1960, when the Kishi Cabinet sought to conclude the new Security Treaty for greater mutual cooperation between Japan and the United States. However, the actual treaty was a result of increased public dissatisfaction due to the growing concern that the U.S. military would be drawn into the war, criticism of the criminal immunity of U.S. soldiers in Japan, and the suspicion that Prime Minister Kishi, a cabinet member during World War II, was a Class A war criminal. The riots intensified with the crushing death of a student (Michiko Kaba) during the demonstration, leading to the resignation of Kishi's cabinet a week later. The crushing death of a student (Michiko Kaba) during the demonstration intensified the riots, leading to the resignation of Kishi's cabinet a week later. The photographers include such distinguished names as Hiroshi Hamaya, Ihei Kimura, Shomei Higashimatsu, Shigekazu Nagano, Yukichi Watanabe and Hiroshi Kawashima. (Included in The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990)
