The origin of Aizu lacquerware dates back to the Edo period. In the Aizu region, with an abundance of lacquer sources and a gathering of skilled craftsmen, the production of lacquerware flourished. Especially with the support of the Aizu clan, the techniques advanced, leading to the creation of luxurious and intricate lacquerware.

From the late Edo period to the Meiji era, Aizu lacquerware gained high recognition for its beauty and technical excellence, and it was even supplied to the imperial family and samurai families.

Modern Aizu Lacquerware
Even today, Aizu lacquerware continues to follow traditional techniques while adapting to modern designs and uses. The Aizu region is home to many lacquerware workshops where artisans continue to pass down these skills. Additionally, Aizu lacquerware can be found in tourist areas and gift shops, and is beloved by people both domestically and internationally.
