The most famous domaine in Burgundy is the epitome of red Burgundy and bears the glorious name Domaine Romanée Conti (DRC). The estate is located east of the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côte d'Or wine-growing region. The history of the Domaine Romanée Conti goes back to the Roman Empire. Records go back to the year 1232, and during this period the ownership changed only nine times. The Romanée vineyard was planted exclusively with Pinot Noir grapes by the monks of Staint-Vivant (Benedictine monks) and is still the same size today as it was back then. In the 17th century, the nobility began to take an interest in the vineyard location and the estate, which led to a dispute between Louis François of Bourbon-Conti and Mrs. de Pompadour in 1760. The Romanee region then fell to Louis François of Bourbon-Conti. As a result, the prince added his name Conti to the vineyard location, thus giving rise to the term Romanée Conti. The owner owned the Domaine Romanée Conti from 1760 to 1793. The Domaine Romanée Conti experienced another milestone in 1942, when Mr. de Villaine, grandson of Mr. Davault, who had owned the domaine since 1869, took over management of the estate. However, he was not the sole owner at that time; rather, the Domaine Romanée Conti was shared with the Leroy family. In the same decade, it was decided to replant the entire 18 hectare area, which until then had still been planted with ungrafted vines. Due to the continuing decline in yield, which ultimately amounted to just under 500 bottles, the owners of the Domaine Romanée Conti decided to clear the land and replant it in 1945. Therefore, no wine was produced from the Romanée Conti monopoly site between 1946 and 1951. Before the vineyard was finally cleared, plant material was removed. This was used to replant the La Tâche site, so that today the La Tâche monopoly site consists of three quarters of the Romanée Conti site's vines. Today it is not known exactly which rootstocks were used to replant the Romanée Conti site, but Mr. Villaine assumes that they must have been Riparia.
A historic find from the internationally celebrated Burgundy wine producer, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Marc de Bourgogne is a spirit produced from the grape seeds, skin and pulp that remain after vinification. Distillation and aging in oak barrels then follows. Expect the wonderful complexity of toffeed, spiced and dried fruit notes.
