Maartens Maartens was the pseudonym of J.M.W van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915). He wrote,
in English, the first Dutch detective story: The Black Box Murders, 1889). In his time he was justly celebrated and good friends with a.o. J.M. Barrie, Thomas Hardy, Edmond Gosse and other famous English writers. his skillfully written novels, stories and poems are nowadays unjustly somewhat forgotten. They form a fascinating insight in the literature of the European fin-de-siecle though.
