A typicall atmospheric oil on board seascape by the 19th century English artist Edwin Ellis who specialised in painting ocean scenes usually with boats caught in stormy waters.
The painting offered is a depiction of Mirzen Head in County Cork which is the most south - westerly point in Ireland and renowned for its tempestuous ocean waves but within this beautiful example of the painters work the sea appears to be calm as two men bring in their boat to the shoreline while a yacht can be seen sailing in the distance with what appears to be a rather ominous dark cloud descending into the bay .
Perhaps experience and sound observation has earned the boatmen to bring their boat home ?.
We will never know the story unfold, however this lovely painting survives in very nice condition to remind us of the power of the ocean in those shores,
Edwin Ellis RBA was a Nottingham born English painter in oils and watercolours. He took evening classes in his late teens at the Government School of Design in Nottingham while working as a draughtsman in the family lace-making business but by 1867 he was living in London working as an artist. He concentrated on marines, coastal life and coastal landscapes and has been described as 'a brilliant colourist,' who was dedicated to conveying the 'invigorating and exhilarating effects of the sea.'
The artists work is in a number of holdings and important collections , museums and art galleries including those of Nottingham, Sheffield, Bradford, Plymouth, Leeds and Glasgow.

We cannot calculate these as they are levied in the country of destination and the amount payable is determined by customs there and not by ourselves or the auctioneers. We have experienced some customs charging higher than expected import taxes; so we would advise bidders to attempt the establish the likely excise duties that your own National customs will charge you before bidding and committing to buy the painting. We must emphasise it is NOT the UK customs that will be charging the buyer but the customs authorities within the recipient country ,
