【Product details】
The shime-daiko (締太鼓) is a type of traditional Japanese drum characterized by its high-pitched sound, distinctively sharper than other Japanese drums. It features a double-headed structure with skins stretched over both sides of the wooden body. The tuning holes are laced with hemp cords using the tatemaki method, allowing the tension of the drumhead to be adjusted to change the pitch and intensity of the sound.
This particular drum has skins adorned with a Mitsudomoe pattern, painted in black, red, and green commas. The mitsudomoe is a sacred symbol in Japan, often associated with Shinto shrines and martial arts. It represents the interplay of the three elements of the universe: heaven, earth, and mankind, symbolizing the harmonious balance between them. In some contexts, it is also seen as a symbol of protection.
The drum's wooden body is coated with a black lacquer finish and decorated with gold maki-e of wisteria designs. The wisteria flower symbolizes elegance, beauty, and longevity in Japanese culture. Its cascading blossoms represent humility and reflect the transient beauty of life, a common theme in Japanese aesthetics. The maki-e technique is a traditional Japanese decorative method where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate and refined designs.
We have not thoroughly tested its functionality, so please consider it as a decorative piece. However, when lightly tapped, it produced sound without any issues. The central drum cylinder (body) is not fixed in place and moves slightly inside. This drum exhibits signs of age, including wear, small scratches, scuffs, stains, and dirt, along with some chips in the lacquer. It retains a charming antique feel. Please examine the photos carefully to assess the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 16.5 cm W 35.5 cm D 35.5 cm
