Byôbu 屏風 (paravento) - Legno laccato, Foglia argento dorato, Metallo - Rinpa School - Giappone - Dipinto: XIX secolo (tardo periodo Edo/inizio periodo Meiji)
A beautiful tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a serene Rinpa School-style painting on a goldish silver leaf background, depicting a tranquil flower garden filled with white chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku). The painting reflects the gentle elegance characteristic of the Rinpa school, known for its refined depiction of nature. In Japanese culture, chrysanthemums symbolize happiness, love, longevity, and joy.
The panels are bordered by two silk brocade trims: a thin light brown inner border and a wider dark brown outer border. The screen is framed in black lacquered wood with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period). The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished at a later date in Japan, a process requiring highly skilled craftsmanship.
Dimension:
Total width: 359.4 cm. (2 x 61.1 cm and 4 x 59.3 cm); Height: cm.
Considering its age, approximately 125-225 years old, the byôbu is in good condition with restorations and wear consistent with its age. The second panel features an old gold leaf restoration that has discoloured over time. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
