La Trappe Trappist Oak Batch: 34, 35, 36
37.5cl - 3 bottles - 11%alc

This beer is brewed by de Koningshoeven by the Netherlands

Batch 34

Characteristic of batch 34 is the dark amber brown color and the fairly fragile foam head. The main component of this batch is a red wine from Cahors, Lot department, which has matured for more than 2.5 years in French Malbec barriques. The grapes used for Malbec wines contain a lot of color and powerful tannins, which give the characteristic full flavor and dark color.

The first olfactory impression of this Oak Aged is complex and evokes associations of black ripe fruit, vanilla, cocoa and tobacco.

In contrast to Batch 31, which also used Malbec wine barrels, the wood character is more prominent in the taste due to the use of relatively much new wood in this batch. In combination with the long maturation, this results in a very high content of wood tannins for an intensive Oak Aged experience.

The bitterness is greatly reduced during maturation, making the beer somewhat sweeter and softer than the normal Quadrupel.

The red wine is clearly recognizable in the aftertaste, ending with a fine slightly sour aftertaste.

Batch 35

The main component of this batch has matured for more than 2 years in Cachaça barriques. This is a sugar cane distillate from Brazil. Cachaça, like other rums, is made from sugar cane juice. The difference is that this type of rum is always made 100% from freshly pressed sugar cane juice and therefore has a distinct sugar cane taste. The type of wood and the duration of maturation have a major influence on the smell and taste of the Cachaça.

Batch 35 presents itself with a finely pearled beige head and a deep-dark amber beer color.

The first olfactory impression of this Oak Aged is very complex with fruity rum associations of tropical fruit and many spices (including cinnamon and licorice). Just like the caramel and malt aromas, the oak is also clearly present.

The taste is pleasantly sweet, silky soft with the right fullness, and a bit boozy. The elegant and harmonious bitterness of La Trappe Quadrupel is very well preserved. While tasting, you can recognize flavors of Cachaça, dates, plum, ginger, oak and smoke. The long maturation has given this beer its own unique character.

As the beer warms, the oak flavor becomes more prominent and the beer becomes tannic richer and drier in the aftertaste.

Batch 36

For this edition, only French cognac barriques were used on which the Quadrupel has matured for more than a year and a half. Cognac is a type of brandy from France, made in the departments of Charente and Charante-Maritime. Cognac is prepared under strictly protected conditions. For example, cognac is distilled twice in so-called copper 'Pot Stills' and must then mature for at least two years in barriques, traditionally made from French Limousin or Tonçais oak. To maximize the special scent and taste of the cognac, 100 percent cognac Limousin barriques were used for this batch.

Batch 36 presents itself with a finely pearled foam head. The color is a lot darker than the normal Quadrupel. The scent immediately shows a very subtle and refined cognac note with grapes, dried fruit, almond and nutmeg.

The taste can be described as warm and velvety soft. The bitterness is lower than with the normal Quadrupel and has been pushed more into the background. The undertone of the beer is pleasantly sweet, especially due to the high alcohol content, which has risen to almost 12 percent. The malty caramel and ester notes return in the aftertaste, together with the oak and of course the cognac.

This batch of Quadrupel Oak Aged can be called unique in several respects. Batch 36 was blended in August 2019.
