A fantastic cast iron tetsubin 鉄瓶 (kettle) featuring a hexagonal-shaped body adorned with decorated panes in low relief. Most panes showcase a geometric hexagonal pattern, while one features stylized calligraphy. On the reverse side, a serene scene of a thatched-roof house near a bridge and pine tree is depicted. The upstanding rim is detailed with a meander motif, and the kettle is topped by an upright warabite-shaped loop handle. The back bears an embossed three-character seal: ‘Tsujinishi zô’ 辻西造.
The kettle is completed with a bronze lid featuring a charming chrysanthemum-shaped knob. The underside of the lid is signed ‘Created by Ryûbundô’ 龍文堂造. Ryûbundô, the esteemed Kyoto metalwork studio founded by Ryubun in the 18th century and later continued by Shikata Yasunosuke, is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship in tetsubin making. With a long-standing legacy, the studio is celebrated for producing intricate and high-quality tetsubin designs.
The tetsubin is in good original condition with expected traces of wear consistent with its age, such as oxidation around the spout and rim. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. The kettle has been tested and shows no leakage.
