Tibetan Sutra Manuscript, c. 17th Century, written on mulberry tree leaves paper and illuminated with two figures of Buddha.
From the snow-capped mountains of Tibet and the land of the Dalai Lama, this wonderful 17th century Buddhist sutra (sermon) manuscript page is written on Mulberry tree leaves paper on the two sides in neat Tibetan script, using a stylus silver ink on a china black ink background. The prayers were scribed onto pages made from mulberry tree leaves. The more luxurious the manuscript, the richer the monastery.
Size: 61 cm L - 24 inches
Material: Mulberry tree leaves paper
Culture: Tibet, c. 17th Century A.D.
Condition: Intact
Provenance: ex. P. Sloan collection, London, acquired in the 1990s.
