This Elac Miraphon 20 automatic record player on foot is from 1966. The device was designed with the idea that a good player can be combined with automatic operation of the associated arm.
The arm of this gramophone is operated via 3 push buttons for records with a diameter of 17, 25 and 30 cm respectively. After pressing a button, everything else goes automatically. Playback can be stopped prematurely by pressing any button. Manual operation remains possible by placing the arm above the run-in groove by hand. In that case, the hydraulic arm lift can be operated via a lever.
The automatic switch-off only comes into action when the needle has ended up in the run-out groove, so nothing extra is carried along by the arm (and the needle) during the last piece of music. The needle force can be set with a numbered disk on the back of the arm. The rotation speed can be adjusted with the handle on the left front.
Dr Heinrich Hecht starts a technical company for underwater sound technology in Kiel in 1908. In 1911 Signalgesellschaft GmbH is founded. The managers are Dr Hecht, Dr Wilhelm Rudolf, Walter Hahnemann and Gerhard Schidt.
After the First World War, Electroacustic GmbH (ELAC) is founded in 1926. The company does well and grows to 5000 employees. During WW2, the activities stop, the war is survived by manufacturing sewing machines and other products.
At the end of 1948, the first turntable is created, the PD1. In the first year, 5600 are produced. In total, 4 million turntables are made in the 50s and 60s. The first crystal PU from Elac is the KST1 with a needle pressure of 27 grams. In 1957, Elac obtains a patent on the MM pickup, which is sold through licenses to Shure, for example.
