Visualizza traduzioneArmadietti da farmacia 薬笥 (kusuri'dansu) - Legno Kiri (Paulownia), Legno Sugi (cedro), Ferro forgiato a mano - Giappone - XIX secolo (tardo periodo Edo/inizio periodo Meiji)
N. 88830287
Amazing pair of unusually tall wooden apothecary cabinet 薬笥 (kusuri’dansu) with no less than 50 (!) drawers each. Very rare to encounter a pair of this age still together.
The drawer fronts crafted from indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood, and the sides of sugi (cedar) wood. Varnished in a sought after warm brown hue, a colour that we like to call ‘golden oak’ with a good aged patina.
Each small drawer fitted with a circular pull ring, and the large lower drawers with sturdy hand-forged iron ‘kakute’-shaped bail handles. Most drawers with an inscription on the underside indicating their precise places is the cabinet. They are very deep for easy storage, and they run smoothly.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Dimensions of a single cabinet:
Height 129.6 cm, Width 77.5 cm, Depth 29.8 cm.
Both in a very good completely restored condition with some traces of wear conform age. One escutcheon missing. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
Apothecary chests were used by doctors and teahouses to store medicines. They are also called hyakumi-dansu (“hundred flavors chest”) because of their many small drawers to sort and store traditional medicines. Yet another name for them is hyakume-dansu (“hundred eyes chest”) because of the many round handles that look like eyeballs.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
