A black & red Shunkei-style lacquered wooden house shrine 仏壇 (butsudan) with a lot of excessive details.
The gilded interior of the butsudan has detailed shrine elements decorated with many different auspicious symbols, like dragons, phoenixes, lotus flowers and chrysanthemums. Please take a close look at the photos of the interior to get a grasp of the various details.
The altar is made to house three votive figures. Hanging in three alcoves are devotive hanging scrolls 掛け軸 (kakejiku).
The altar is raised by galleries with a lotus design.
The shrine can be closed off by a pair of black lacquered interior doors with gold lacquer lattice work and adorned with gold lacquered panels. And by a pair of black lacquer outer doors with gold lacquered cartouches fitted with decorative metal hardware and a large ornate sliding lock in front.
Outside of the inner door the butsudan is equipped with two drawers each with their own beautiful golden lotus flowers motifs.
Placed on a base featuring a pair of sliding doors with golden maki-e (lacquer design) of a birds and flowers, and a hidden pull-out tray.
When acquired new, in Japan these shrines are extremely expensive to buy!
Period: Japan – Mid-Shôwa period (Mid-20th century).
Approx. dimensions:
Height 161.5 cm, Width 88 cm with closed doors , width with open doors 144 cm, Depth 62 cm.
In a very good condition with minimal traces of wear conform age and normal use. For a clear general condition reference, please refer to the photos.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
