The Roman cult of Mithras was very popular in the Roman Empire. It was an all-male cult and was often associated with the military. Mithraic temples were placed in an underground cave, or were built partly into the ground to evoke a cave.
There are no written records about the Mithraism rituals, but excavations have alluded to the use of dramatic lighting, incense and animal sacrifice.
With the introduction of Christianity Mithraism rapidly declined in the late 3rd century, and by the 4th century it completely disappeared.
