Erich Mendelsohn nacque il 21 marzo 1887 nella città prussiana di Allenstein, al n. 21 di Oberstrasse. Nel 1908, Mendelsohn si immatricolò alla Technische Hochschule di Berlino, per poi continuare gli studi all'università di Monaco di Baviera, dove si laureò nel 1914 cum laude.
Uno dei più celebri architetti del XX secolo, conosciuto per i suoi edifici espressionisti, si affermò in età giovanile, grazie alla realizzazione fra il 1918 e il 1924 della "Torre Einstein" a Potsdam. La torre, progettata come edificio - telescopio, fu costruita per la verifica empirica di alcuni aspetti delle teorie elaborate dal celebre scienziato. Nel 1921 Mendelsohn si occupò della realizzazione della "Fabbrica di Cappelli" a Luckenwalde, edificio il cui tetto richiama la forma di un cappello, come a voler pubblicizzare l'edificio stesso.
Tra gli anni '20 e gli anni '30 realizzò molti edifici, interpretando lo stile razionalistà, che si affermò in quegli anni. I suoi edifici, con le loro forme curvilinee, conservavano qualcosa del periodo espressionista.
All'avvento del nazismo fu costretto ad espatriare in Gran Bretagna. Per un certo periodo fu attivo anche in Palestina, prima di stabilirsi negli Stati Uniti.

Erich Mendelsohn was born on March 21, 1887 in the Prussian town of Allenstein, at no. 21 Oberstrasse. In 1908, Mendelsohn enrolled at the Technische Hochschule in Berlin, and then continued his studies at the University of Munich, where he graduated cum laude in 1914.
One of the most famous architects of the 20th century, known for his expressionist buildings, he established himself at a young age, thanks to the construction between 1918 and 1924 of the "Einstein Tower" in Potsdam. The tower, designed as a telescope building, was built for the empirical verification of some aspects of the theories developed by the famous scientist. In 1921, Mendelsohn took care of the construction of the "Hat Factory" in Luckenwalde, a building whose roof recalls the shape of a hat, as if to advertise the building itself.
Between the 1920s and 1930s he created many buildings, interpreting the rationalist style, which was established in those years. His buildings, with their curvilinear forms, retained something of the Expressionist period.
With the advent of Nazism he was forced to emigrate to Great Britain. For a time he was also active in Palestine, before settling in the United States.
