Exquisite large Victorian pique pendant with a child photograph on the other side, inlaid with real gold and sterling silver, made circa 1880. Gold plated 925 Sterling silver chain also included in the sale. A bit of history: When Prince Albert died in 1861 Queen Victoria plunged in to mourning taking most of the country with her. It became the fashion to wear all things black, tortoiseshell were carved in to many forms. At first they were plain then decoration crept in. Tortoiseshell was inlaid with gold and silver intricate designs such as this brooch. Today they are very collectable as reproductions cannot be made. Measurements Weight approximately 20 grams Length approximately 5 centimetres Chain gold plated 925 sterling silver approximately 45 centimetres, hallmarked Pendant made of tortoise shell inlaid with real gold and silver Tested with UV light, beautiful shades of green Please note: Many of my items are vintage and are therefore likely to show some age-related wear.
