A very unusual and spectacular remnant of a postal envelope sent from Port au Prince, Haiti to London on 10 September 1879. It has 16 GB SG47 2d Blue (Plate 15) stamps in 3 blocks and a single.
The use of British stamps abroad was overseen by the British Post Office in a number of overseas territories, usually until the local administrations were able to operate their own postal services and issue their own stamps. In Haiti GB stamps were issued only between 1865 to 1881, and are recognised by the distinctive ' E53' Vertical Oval cancellations.
The Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth and British Empire Catalogue lists many of these GB stamps used abroad under the heading, "British Post Offices Abroad" where details and further information can be found. In most cases the value of these stamps is significantly higher than those used normally in the United Kingdom. These SG47 2d Blue stamps are listed under the Stanley Gibbons reference SG Z38 in the catalogue.
This cover has condition issues, but what an impressive item it is, containing 16 SG47 2d Blues, with E53 cancellations, in the following blocks. 8 stamps in a block with corner letters SC to TF, 4 stamps in a block QC to RD, an irregular block of 3 stamps, QF, RE, RF and a single stamp LD. The item has a clear "Port au Prince" circular cancellation dated September 10th 1879 and there is a separate red cancellation dated 29th September 1879 when the item arrived in London.
The various photographs show the condition of the item and the stamps, so please study them carefully to make your informed judgement about this item.
In my opinion the condition issues do not detract from the rarity of the cover, or it's impressive addition to a stamp collection. I actually had this framed behind glass as it is such a stunning cover and deserves to be seen. Where else will you ever find another like it? It is a €1 start with no reserve, so I will let the bidders decide it's value!
