This African statuette, sometimes referred to as a "colon", embodies the spiritual spouse as conceived by the diviner's indications. According to Susan Vogel in "African Art, Western Eyes" (p. 255), a figure of this kind, representing the conjugal ideal, is often depicted dressed in city clothes, suggesting that this spiritual husband is supposed to have a job in town. Through the worship of this spiritual double, the earthly spouse naturally anticipates benefiting from his or her resources, favors and protection. In Côte d'Ivoire, sixty different ethnic groups live side by side, including the Baoulé, located in the center of the country. Originating from the Akan culture, they migrated from Ghana, and practice agriculture and hunting, while sharing cultural traits with the Gouro, from whom they have adopted certain rites and masks.
