Gouden Rijder of 14 guilders - gold - minted in Harderwijk - 1751 over 1 - mint master: Martinus Holtzhey Sr. (*)

Obverse: knight on horseback holding a sword, crowned crest of the province of Gelderland below: MO ∙ AUR ∙ PRO . CONFŒD ∙ - BELG . D . G . & C . Z . (variety without “rosette” before MO)

Reverse: crowned shield with crowned lion holding a sword and bundle of arrows between value indication of 14 GL: CONCORDIA RESPARVÆ CRESCUNT .

Condition: slabbed and graded by NGC certification no. 6498735-011 as AU55. A beautiful coin well struck, with original lustre and fine patina.

Weight: (estimated, as slabbed) 9.90 g. Diameter: 28mm.

(*) Martinus Holtzhey Sr. was appointed master of the Provincial Mint in Harderwijk in 1749. In 1752 - after a dispute about the appointment of his 15 year old son Martinus Jr. as die cutter - he left Harderwijk for Middelburg to take up the position of mint master at the Zeeland Provincial Mint over there. His mint master's mark of a half-tall male figure with two rue bushes held aloft in his hands, is derived from the coat of arms of the German Holthay family from which the mint master believed he descended. Behind the man we see a wavy line, which probably represents the Rhine or Moselle river as a reference to the wine regions in that area.
