The Wii (International Paleote: [ˈwiː]) is a seventh-generation video game console, the fifth home console from Nintendo, and the successor to the Nintendo GameCube. It was codenamed Revolution until April 27, 2006, when its official name was announced. As a seventh-generation video game system, it is a direct competitor to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3. Although Nintendo does not market the Wii as a competitor to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it is considered a seventh-generation console due to its release date (the period between the releases of the Xbox 360 and PS3) and its innovative game controllers. Nintendo claims that its console is aimed at a wider audience than both competitors. The console's distinctive features are the unique Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus wireless controllers, which respond to the player's movements.
