Large handle of a situla with two attachments in the shape of a head.
Dimensions: 22 x 17 cm.
Roman Empire, 2nd-3rd centuries AD.
Situla is the Latin word for bucket or pail, and it defines a variety of elaborate bucket-shaped vessels, usually with a carrying handle at the top. The handle could be accommodated at either side of the situla with a pair of attachments. These attachments usually represented bearded male characters, such as Jupiter, Ocean or the Lares gods.
Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from a private collector (J.S.), owned before 70's.
