ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. Period of 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Æ Fals. Standing Caliph type. Qinnasrin mint. On the obverse, the coin features the image of the Caliph standing and facing forward, bearded, with his right hand resting on the pommel of his sword. Surrounding this image is an inscription in Kufic script that reads: " عبد الله عبد الملك أمير المؤمنين" (For the servant of God, Abd al-Malik, Commander of the Faithful). The reverse side of the coin shows a transformed cross standing on four steps and Φ instead of the cross. To the left of the is the word "واف" ( meaning full weight), and to the right, "بقسطرين" (in Qinnasrin). Encircling the image is part of the first Kalima: "لا إله إلا الله وحده محمد رسول الله" (There is no God but God alone; Muhammad is the prophet of God); edge lightly bent.
