Byôbu 屏風 (paravento) - Legno, Seta - Giappone - Tardo periodo Meiji (inizio XX secolo)
A fantastic, low six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a serene Rinpa School-style painting on a faux-gold leaf background, depicting a tranquil spring landscape.
At the center of the scene, large bamboo 竹 (take) rises from behind a rustic rock formation, flanked by a small bush of lespedeza 萩 (hagi) and vibrant chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) in bright white and blue. These elements grow at the bend of a swirling river, with a slanting Japanese apricot tree in full bloom, displaying pink blossoms, and an orchid 蘭科 (ranka) nearby.
The painting is rendered in watercolour and ink on shiny faux-gold leaf, with the petals of the chrysanthemums painted using shell paste 胡粉 (gofun) in high relief. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame.
Period: Japan – Late Meiji period (Early 20th century).
The reverse with inscription: "Acquired Shôwa 28" 昭和二拾八年求, Anno 1953.
Dimensions:
Total width: 275 cm (2 x 47.1 cm and 4 x 45.2 cm); Height: 66.6 cm.
Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear consistent with its age. Light water stain on the left side. There has been some restoration work on the paper backside. Please refer to the photos for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
