Byôbu 屏風 (paravento) - Seta, Foglia d'oro, Legno laccato - Giappone - Periodo Meiji (1868-1912)
An amazing, low six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) displaying a tranquil Rinpa School-style painting on gold leaf, capturing a winter landscape along the bank of a meandering river.
In front of a hilly backdrop, stalks of bamboo and other plants with withered leaves are covered in snow. The scene is brought to life by small birds like sparrows 雀 (suzume) and Japanese tits 四十雀 (shijûkara), scurrying and flying around.
Period: Japan – The painting dates from the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Rendered in watercolour and ink on gold leaf. The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims – a slender dark brown-golden one and a broader light golden one, and is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective metal hardware.
The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished at a later (more recent) date in Japan. A highly skilled craftsmanship that requires a lot of expertise and knowledge.
Dimensions:
Total width: 268.1 cm (2 x 46 cm and 4 x 44.1 cm); Height: 91.8 cm.
In a very good restored condition. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
