Hartmann Schedel / Michael Wolgemut/ Wilhelm Pleydenwurff - The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) - 1493
Original incunabulum leaf CCXXIII (223) from the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel, the first Latin edition from 1493.
An incunabulum (cradle print) is a book printed in Europe before 1 January 1501, when the printing press was still in its infancy, and of which the text is set in movable type. They are now rarely seen on the market.
The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) by Hartmann Schedel is one of the most famous and best illustrated incunabula. The beautiful woodcuts were made by Michael Wohlgemut (1434/37-1519) and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1450-1494), a teacher of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer probably also contributed to the execution of many of the woodcuts for this incunabulum.
The beautifully coloured woodcuts on the recto side show show three beautiful illustrations:
1. In 1308, the Island of Rhodes was taken by the Order of the Blessed John under papal authority after the fall of Jerusalem and the suppression of the Templars, where they expelled the Turks, rebuilt the city and fleet, protected nearby Christian territories, received the Templars' estates as a reward, adopted the rule of St. Augustine with papal support, and defended the island against repeated Turkish attacks, with Rhodes becoming a refuge for Christians.
2. Iohannes, king of Bohemia.
3. Dante Alighieri of Florence, a renowned bard and poet, and a famous teacher of the Holy Scriptures.
On the verso side, three portraits are shown:
1. Robert, son of Charles (Caroli) the Second, king of Sicily and Apuleia, reigned there for 33 years after the death of his father
2. Canis Della Scala, lord of Verona
3. Ludovicus. son of King Philip of France, reigned for two years as his father’s successor
This is not a facsimile edition, but an original leaf printed in the 15th century - so 531 years old!
