Quran - Quran - India (Bihar) - 1425

A fabulous illuminated manuscript leaf from a Koran originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. The leaf is from the Meccan Chapter 37, As-Saffat (Those Angels Lined up in Ranks), v 19-25, which elaborates on the fate of the deniers after the resurrection once they realise that Gods judgement is upon them. The folio contains an elaborate and highly decorative illuminated Juz marking the 20th verse of Chapter, together with simple gold aya (verse markings) in gold with 6 radials, reference to 'Allah' (God) in solid gold lettering. The whole is framed simply in red and blue lines. This is a fine leaf from an ancient Quran that would grace any collection. This prosperous state, lying south of Nepal close bordering the Ganges river, became Muslim in the 12th century originally under the Bengal Governors. The Muslim calligraphers developed a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. Because Bihar is a warm and humid province, manuscripts from there, do not generally keep well. This one, however, is in usually good condition despite the damp staining upper left of the folio, with the scripture untouched by damp and the juz, Surah and gold 'aya' (roundels) all being in a good state. PLEASE NOTE. Shipping costs are not solely the cost of the delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the delivery agent for processing. The manuscript will be sent with the supporting mount to ensure safe travel.
