Egyptian scarab amulet. Late Period (664-332 B.C)

Scarabs were popular amulets. This type of pieces is usually found in Egypt from 4000 BC, as well as in the Near East, the Indus Valley civilization and Europe. This scarab is made of faience, a vitreous frit obtained from a paste made from sand or granular quartz, which was previously mixed with an alkaline-type binding material. The most common colors (sky blue, greenish blue and ochre) were obtained by applying copper, iron, cobalt or manganese pigments.

In ancient Egypt the scarab was seen as a reflection of the heavenly cycle, and as representing the idea of rebirth or regeneration. The god Ra was often depicted as a scarab beetle or as a scarab beetle-headed man. They believed that Khepri (Ra) renewed the sun every day, before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it again on the next day.
