Biancheria da tavola del Tardo Impero Napoleone 111 con 5 tovaglioli. - Tovaglia - 2.65 m - 1.8 m

This is a cotton table linen with 5 matching cream napkins, measuring 40cm x 40cm. The linen dates back to approximately 1915 and has only recently seen the daylight for the first time when the lady owner decided to dispose of her great grandparents wedding trousseaux. All the linen was very carefully wrapped in white silk paper and after that wrapped in plain white linen. The piece is as new and never has been used to deck the dining room table. We have had the piece dry cleaned, although it did not need it!! I have thoroughly checked every detail and particularly the lace squares, but could not find any repairs etc. The back of the table linen has still long threads and I can only assume that part of the table linen was hand finished. It consist of solid cream squares which have been embroidered with an chrysanthemum in high relief and the leaves have open thread work. The pieces are framed with a thin open thread work design which looks like a variation of the classic Greek Key design. The lace squares appear to have the similar design. Please look carefully to the joints between the solid pieces and the lace. It is absolutely perfect. To highlight the lace and before photographing the linen I have put blue silk paper on the table first and then decked the table with the linen. I subsequently styled and photographed it with all blue faïence and glasses, but of course you can use any colour coördination if you so wish. The edges of the table linen are finished in scalloped lace ( please see last photo.) The napkins are framed also with a small lace border and embroidery in one corner.
