Naive Folk statue
19th Century
Original polychrome on wood.
Unique statue made by an unknown artist for the adoration of a humble chapel or family.
This kind of statues were produced by local artist with little technichal knowledge who infused them full of devotion and tradition, hence the adjective "folk" or "naive".
Here we can see Saint Catherine of Alexandria represented with a kind expression of happiness and large open eyes, quite joyful iconography.
She was, according to tradition, a Christian saint and virgin, who was martyred in the early fourth century at the hands of the emperor Maxentius.
