浜田杏堂 Hamada Kodo (1766-1815) Painter and doctor of Chinese medicine in the late mid-Edo period. Adopted at an early age by the Hamada family of Confucian physicians, he was later described as an eminent physician. Studied painting under Fukuhara Gogaku while practising medicine. He studied flower-and-bird and landscape painting of the Yuan and Ming dynasties in China and established a family. He also excelled in calligraphy and poetry.
