Castiglioni studied both arts and classics before changing direction and graduating in architecture from Milan Polytechnic. Along with his two brothers, also architects, he worked in exhibition design and architectural projects before turning his attention to design. Castiglioni went on to be professor of industrial design at Milan Polytechnic and this combination of industrial influences and domestic style can be seen in many of his pieces. The Lampadina Table Lamp Castiglioni created for Flos is one such piece. The bare bulb design is immediately striking but this simple concept hides many discrete features. The strength of the light from the Lampadina Table Lamp can also be altered by selecting from direct or diffuse lighting settings.
