This is a beautiful Gunma kokeshi made by Yoshida Takashi 吉田多加志(1948-2007)
artist:Yoshida Takashi 吉田多加志(1948-2007) was born in Gunma where the famous for "創作こけし Sosaku Kokeshi" that is a new "kokeshi" designed by the author's free ideas rather than the traditional form of "kokeshi"
He won some art prize like prime minister prize.
The thick zelkova of hundreds of years old are roughly divided into four equal parts and hand-carved one by one. He often said "I can't carve it with a careless mind. Ten centimeters' worth of rings is the equivalent of a human lifetime."

Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children. Later they became popular souvenirs and real decorative items, for some even collector items.
