This small but delightful portrait, where his good-natured figure emerges while he is busy working in his study, is also of great historical importance, testifying to Father relationships with Pope Pius VII. In the letter he holds in his hand, in fact, the name of the pontiff is mentioned with the date 1806. It should be remembered that in these years the Papal State was experiencing a moment of crisis due to the interference of Napoleon Bonaparte who had brought Pope Chiaramonti to Paris and he subsequently forced him into exile in Savona. Stylistically the portrait stands out for the use of soft and cold colours, of great importance is the artist's skill in masterfully rendering the silver inkwell on the table.
