Northwest Africa 15813 (NWA 15813)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: February, 2023

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Four black fragments partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Carbonaceous chondrite composed of large up to 3 mm sized chondrules, up to 4 mm sized whitish CAIs, and olivine amoeboids all set into a fine-grained almost black matrix. Some chondrules show brownish staining due to terrestrial alteration. Opaque phases include magnetite, sulfides, and FeNi metal. Cracks are often filled with secondary calcite.

Geochemistry: Ni in sulfides 23.6±2.5 wt%, N=5

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3). Oxidized subgroup based on high concentrations of Ni in sulfides (Gattacceca et al., 2020)
