Fire of Streets / Luminance of Streets (Signed)” is a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Genjin Hoshi. Long before he picked up a camera, Hoshi says that he has loved to roam the streets at night since he was a boy. After turning 20, he left Yokohama, where he was born and raised, to work at night in the countryside. For a time, his business was successful and he experienced a glamorous life, but the business closed down, leaving him with debts. In the midst of such a tumultuous life, he began to take up photography seriously after his mid-20s, studying at the Institute of Contemporary Photography and working as a freelance photographer from 2000 onward. This book is his first work, published in 2007. The book consists of street photographs depicting “night life” in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Yokohama, and Kamagasaki. Rather than the sniper's eye of Daido Moriyama's snaps or Seiji Kurata's, the “loneliness” and “solidarity” that they seemed to share because they were of the same kind are beautifully depicted in this book, and the illustrations full of “love” as if they picked up unseen human patterns and inner feelings fascinate the viewer. Signed by the photographer.
