Archibald Lang Fleming (1883-1953) was the inaugural Bishop of The Arctic from 1933 to 1949, and Archdeacon of The Arctic from 1927 to his elevation to the Episcopate. This work is a vivid account of life in the arctic, drawing on the author’s experiences as a missionary and traveler in the far northern regions. Published in 1928, the book provides an intimate look at the challenges, resilience, and culture of the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic, as well as the stark and breathtaking beauty of the environment. Fleming writes with sensitivity and admiration about the Inuit people, shedding light on their customs, traditions, and the ingenious ways they adapt to one of the harshest climates on Earth. The book explores themes of survival, community, and spirituality while also reflecting on Fleming’s efforts to share his Christian faith in a setting so vastly different from his own. The narrative is not only a record of personal adventure but also a testament to the unique relationship between humans and their environment in the Arctic.
