Napoleon - Wetboek Napoleon, ingerigt voor het Koningrijk Holland - 1809
Nr. 90664745
8vo (ca. 22 x 13,5 cm). 312, [12] pp. Publisher’s limp boards.
Untrimmed, leaving deckle edges and an occasional point hole intact. Name on title-page, paper on the spine partly gone, conjugate leaves leaves E4.5 loose, last quires with a faint marginal stain. Still, an attractive copy in lovely unsophisticated condition.
First edition of a Dutch adaptation of the Code civil. Louis Napoléon, who had been ruling Holland since 1806, was directed by his brother, Emperor Napoléon, to implement the French Civil Code in Holland. Louis, however, ignored his brother and ordered a code influenced by the French model, but tailored to the Kingdom of Holland: the current Wetboek Napoleon. This code was short-lived: after Napoléon annexed Holland it was replaced by the French Code civil in 1811.
